The top songs of the 70’s saw the already popular genres continue to hit the popularity charts. This was an age of fusion when different music styles were combined to create something altogether new. Experimental classical and minimalist music dominated the decade. Genres like funk, disco, punk music, progressive, art, hard and glam rock were the dominant genres of the decade. Music mix saw genres like jazz-rock fusion, reggae, chamber jazz and heavy metal come into the frame.

The popularity of the music of the 70’s is largely attributed to the popularity of the television. People were now exposed to images and videos. The lifestyle of the singers started getting aired for the benefit of the audience. All this and more meant that music now changed its course. The vocabulary of music changed and new experiments were carried out to woo more and more music lovers. The top songs of this decade saw the music videos being aired on television.

Progressive rock was the dominant genre of the 70’s. Most of the top hits of the decade were progressive rock songs. Some of the biggest names in the progressive rock genre included Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Genesis and Jethro Tull. Hard rock was also made very popular by the British bands Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple.

70’s music also was the breakup of the iconic band The Beatles.

Punk music also saw a huge rise in popularity thanks to the bands like The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Ramones, Blondie and Patti Smith.

In the pop music scenario of the 70s, ABBA was definitely the most popular band of the decade. This Swedish group created some of the greatest pop songs ever sung. Almost all the top hits of the 70s in the genre of pop were sung by ABBA.

If there is one genre that is associated most strongly in any decade, then it has to be disco of the 70’s. Some of the top songs of the 70's were disco songs that were made popular by Van McCoy, Gloria Gaynor, Anita Ward and Donna Summer. The Bee Gees also sang discos like Stayin’ Alive and Night Fever. However, the commercialization of this genre also saw a rapid decline of disco music towards the latter half of the 70s.

Among other music, singer-songwriters continued to make some great songs. Arena rock and heavy metal made their presence felt. R&B and country music continued to hit the charts at regular intervals.

The top songs of the 70’s were characterized by foot tapping music that was a result of the change in people’s outlook about music. Artists sang and performed on television and the music lovers lapped up all of it.
