Our Top Songs of The 60’s

1960s saw music continue to enthrall music lovers all over the world. The decade was typical in the sense that it saw the singers-songwriters emerge as serious contenders for the top hits of the decade. Bob Dylan and The Beatles were prominent singer-songwriters of this decade. The top songs of the 60’s also saw the British bands becoming very popular in the United States.

Among the top songs of the decade were rock songs sung by a variety of artists. Rock music also saw new genres emerging in the form of progressive and folk rock. Towards the latter half of the decade, psychedelic rock came into emergence and was very popular among the masses. The rise of psychedelic rock is attributed to the influence of psychedelic drugs that were extensively used by both the singers and the listeners. The rock scene also saw the return of Elvis Presley after he spent two years in the Army. British bands like The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits, The Animals and others hit the top of the charts with some of the top songs of the 60s. The San Francisco area also saw the emergence of some of the greatest names in rock music – Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead and others.

60’s music also saw pop music continue to hit the charts like ever. Some of the biggest names in pop music of the 60s included Gerry Goffin, Carole King, Chubby Checker, Little Eva and Simon & Garfunkel, among others. Folk music also became very popular through singers like Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul & Mary and the Kingston Trio.

The R&B scene saw the emergence of bands like Motown. In the soul music scene, the popularity was maintained through this decade by artists like Sam Cooke and James Brown. Sly & the Family Stone managed to popularize funk music.

Country music was one of the biggest influences on the music of the 60’s. Nashville Style was the dominant country music style of the decade. Some great artists like Jimmy Reeves, Ray Price, Patsy Cline and Eddy Arnold made country music go through the popularity charts. Country music also breached a major boundary during this decade. Country music, till now, was the domain of the white artists. Pride became the first African-American country music superstar.

1960s was also known for some fatal accidents that saw artists like Johnny Horton, Patsy Cline, Ira Louvin and Jimmy Reeves and some more lose their lives in various accidents.
