Our Top Songs of the 50's

The unquestionable king of 50’s music was Elvis Presley. This decade saw some of the greatest artists in the history of music appear in the scene but no one could match Elvis Presley in terms of popularity and reach. The top songs of the 50’s saw genres like rock, blues, R&B, pop and some other genres become really popular. When we think of the top songs ever produced, the 50’s would rank right there at the top of the list. Some of the greatest and top hits were produced in this decade by some of the greatest and most talented musicians that we ever came to know.

Rock and rock n’ roll remained the most popular genre of the decade. Elvis Presley and Bill Haley epitomized rock n’ roll of this decade and belted out some of the greatest chartbusters. In fact, 50’s music saw Bill Haley sing Rock Around the Clock, which became the first real rock hit. Apart from these two, Fats Domino was another iconic figure in 50’s music. Some of the other major rock hits included Blue Suede Shoes by Carl Perkins, Shake, Rattle and Roll by Big Joe Turner and Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry. With the immense popularity of rock, jazz declined in popularity. One of the major tragedies in the music world saw Richie Valens, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper killed in a plane crash in 1959.

In the blues scene, the major artists of the decade were Fats Domino and Ray Charles. Ray Charles started the boogie-woogie style of blues. The boogie-woogie style of blues still has a big influence on rock n’ roll even today. Numerous singers adopted this style and quite a few used this word in naming their songs too. Another big presence in the blues scene of the 50’s was Big Mama Thornton.

In the pop scene, the already established pop stars of the 1940s continued to ride further waves of success. Pop music continued to thrill lovers of music with some of the top songs of the 50s being belted out by some very talented singers.

Among other music, country music saw an increase in popularity. In the R&B world, the famous Stax Records was founded in this decade.

1950’s music was all about happier times. The previous decade had seen a lot of misery due to the Second World War and this decade was all about mending those scars. Some of the finest singers ever came into the picture in this decade and produced some of the finest songs that we will ever hear.

The top songs of the 50’s still make us tap our feet whenever we hear them. Some of what was produced in the decade will never see a parallel in terms of anything.
