Whenever we think of the top 100 songs, the names that spring to mind include the likes of Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, led Zeppelin, Def Leppard, The Rolling Stones and even names like Nirvana, Michael Jackson and Madonna. In some way or the other, these artistes have created magic through the lyrics, tunes and messages of their songs. They have moved people to tears and also got them into wild frenzies. Such has been the impact of their songs.

Then there have been those one hit singers or groups who created that one single song that made people crazy but not been able to follow up their success. However, they have been rendered immortal due to that one hit of theirs.

The Greatest Top 100 Songs of All Time

Songs have entertained us for generations. Over the years, we have seen some of the greatest creative artists create some great songs for us to enjoy. When we think of top songs, there can be so many of them. Some people think that making a list of the top 100 songs ever is foolhardy because there can never be a list that is unanimous. People will invariably have their own opinions on one or more of the entries.

We have been told that it is a much better idea to list the top 100 best songs per year or per decade. There are lesser number of songs to choose from and the chances of a vociferous debate go down. People generally agree when someone lists something like the top 100 songs of today or the top hits of the 40s. However, we think that if enough research is done, it is possible to make a list of the top 100.

The most important criteria of listing top hits or top 100 songs of today is the impact the songs listed have on the society. Songs, since time immemorial, have been a reflection of the society and people. There were some specific songs sung during the Vietnam War (In the Army Now – Status Quo) or when Scorpions sang “Wind of Change” during the fall of the Berlin Wall. Wind of Change is still the 10th most popular song in Germany.

Similarly, then have been other historic events that have made some songs immortal not only because of their melody but mostly because of the impact that they had and continue to have. There are various music charts that have listed their own top 100 songs ever and people have swayed along with these songs.

For you to look at the top 100 songs, the ideal thing to do is to go through some of the popular charts and choose the common ones. However, you can also simply download all the songs in all the charts and have a great time listening to them.
